The blue princess

The drawing

A pencil dancing over a sheet
First a tummy, then hands, then feet

The child smiled and says gay:
“Look! Look what I’ve drawn at school today!”

Eyes narrow, mouth is twisting, a frown
“But my, it’s blue! Not pink or brown,
blue is not how it’s supposed to be
Is not the right color for a human like you and me”

The child looks you in the eye and says:
“What does color matter? Look, it’s a princess. “

And indeed, it was a princess, but one that is blue
The question is not how much, but why it matters to you.
